- The Crown, Sword, Sceptre and Globus Cruciger of Hungary, in the Hungarian Parliament Building
Hungary has a new constitution. Passed by the Hungarian Parliament and signed by the Hungarian President, this constitution will take effect on January 1, 2012. The constitution was written and passed by the center-right Fidesz party, which currently holds 227 of 385 seats in the Hungarian Parliament, giving it a 59% majority.1 The text of the document is causing the leftists, globalists, and EU tyrants to go into fits, so much so that the left-wing Hungarian parties even boycotted the vote. Here’s why.
First, the constitution is explicitly Christian. The National Credo, which preambles the new constitution, is well worth the read in its two-page entirety. Here are some of the relevant excerpts:2
We are proud, that our King St. Stephen established the Hungarian state on firm foundations a thousand years ago and our country a part of Christian Europe. . . .
We recognize the role of Christianity in preserving our nationhood.
Second, the constitution is explicitly nationalistic. Again from the National Credo:3
We are proud of our forefathers who struggled for survival, freedom, and independence of our country. . . .
We are proud that our people have battled for centuries to protect Europe and have, with their talent and diligence, enriched her common values. . . .
We undertake to preserve and nurture our legacy, the Hungarian culture, our unique language, the man-made and natural treasures of the Carpathian-basin. . . .
We profess that the most important frameworks for our coexistence are the family and the nation. . . .
We respect the achievements of our historic constitution and the Holy Crown, which embodies the continuity of the Hungarian constitutional state and the unity of the nation.
Third, the constitution is thoroughly anti-communist. Again from the National Credo:4
We do not acknowledge the suspension of our historic constitution as a result of foreign occupation. We reject the applicability of the statute of limitations to the inhuman crimes committed against the Hungarian nation and its citizens during the reign of the national socialist and communist regimes.
We do not accept the legal continuity of the communist “constitution” of 1949, which served as the basis of a despotic regime; therefore we declare it null and void.
We agree with the members of the first freely elected Parliament, who pronounced in their first resolution that our freedom of today stems from our 1956 revolution.
We consider that the state sovereignty of Hungary lost on March 19, 1944 was regained on May 2, 1990, when the first freely elected representative body of the people was constituted. We count this latter day as the start of the new democracy and constitutional order of our country.
We also see this in the actual constitution itself. Article J of the Basic Stipulations section states: “(1) The national holidays of Hungary… c) the 23rd of October, to commemorate the 1956 revolution and freedom fight.”5
And lastly, the constitution is pro-family, pro-life, and pro-children. Article M of the Basic Stipulations section states: “(1) Hungary protects the institution of marriage between man and woman, a matrimonial relationship voluntarily established, as well as the family as the basis for the survival of the nation. (2) Hungary supports child-bearing.”6 From the Freedoms and Responsibility section, Article II states: “Human dignity is inviolable. Everyone has the right to life and human dignity; the life of a foetus will be protected from conception.” Article III states: “(3) Eugenic practices aimed at selection of persons, making the human body and its parts a source of profit and the reproductive cloning of human beings are prohibited.” And Article XXI states: “(2) It cannot be considered an infringement of equal voting rights if a super majority law provides an additional vote for mothers in families with minor children, or as a [sic] provided by law, another person may be entitled to an additional vote.”7 In short, marriage is between a man and a woman, child bearing is so encouraged that those with children may receive extra votes, abortion is murder, and human cloning is prohibited.
The families with children receiving extra votes is an especially interesting and, I think, positive idea. One would need to combine it with legislation taking the vote away from those families on welfare, which would be a very powerful move towards saving the Europeans peoples, if enacted across the West.
The Fidesz party was smart when it wrote Article R of the Basic Stipulations: “The approval of a motion to ratify or amend the Constitution shall require the support of at least two-thirds of the Members of Parliament.”8 With the largest party being the center-right Fidesz party, holding 59% of the parliament, and the third largest party being the right-wing ethnonationalist Jobbik party, holding 12% of the parliament, any leftist changes to the constitution are out of the question at this point.
The constitution is not without its problems. While being explicitly pro-Christian, pro-Hungarian, and pro-tradition, it is also very pluralistic as well. Birthright citizenship regardless of ethnicity or race, anti-discrimination laws, and pro-EU sentiments can be found in the new constitution. However, some to most of this can probably be attributed to the pragmatic desire to avoid having the constitution condemned by the draconian EU “Human Rights” Commission or the Council of Europe, which could cause a massive amount of legal trouble for Hungary. Indeed, the European Commission for Democracy through Law, an arm of the Council of Europe, is sending a delegate to Hungary to review the constitution in mid-May due to “a certain number of concerns” with the new constitution.9 This anti-Christian, anti-ethnic European reaction of the EU and its associated organizations is no surprise. As another pro-European writer has noted:
While the European Commission is critical of Hungary’s ‘new’ overt Christian and nationalist constitution, it is painstakingly trying to introduce Turkey into the European Union, although Turkey is even more outspoken about its national and religious identity then the Hungarians. The fact that the European Commission turns a blind eye on Turkey but critical of Hungary is no surprise since they have already proved themselves hostile to Christianity and European identity by issuing a school diary with Jewish and Muslim religious festivals, but completely omitting all the Christian ones.10
I much prefer the Jobbik party to the Fidesz party, but compared to the complete inability and unwillingness of our American nominally center-right party (Republicans) to pass any pro-Christian, pro-American, pro-family, or pro-life laws, much less put those things in the U.S. Constitution, the Fidesz party positively shines.
