On Feb 13th, after giving an impassioned nationalistic speech on the floor of the Hungarian Parliament protesting the new laws allowing foreigners to buy up large patches of Hungarian land, MP Tamás Gaudi-Nagy of the Hungarian nationalist party Jobbik grabbed the two EU flags standing in the front of the Hungarian parliament and threw them out a fourth story window. He called the flags a symbol of colonization which had no place hanging in the national assembly. The act was, of course, more symbolism that anything else as the flags were immediately returned to the parliament, however small acts of open defiance are often the first steps in effective resistance. I pray that this will be the case here. The look of shock on the moderator’s face when Gaudi-Nagy marched down to the front is priceless. I can’t wait until the first state senator or representative grabs the US flag hanging up in an American state capital and throws that out a window, then we will know that things are truly taking a turn for the better here.
