While we’re on the topic of leftist militancy in tennis – the very first man to be ranked world number one in the professional era of tennis, the Romanian Ilie Năstase, is being persecuted for a little racial joke he made during a press conference in March. Current female world number one, black American Serena Williams, is pregnant with her first child. The father is her fiancé, Alexis Ohanian, the co-founder of Reddit. Ohanian is of German and Armenian ancestry, so their baby would be mixed-race. Nastase was overheard commenting: “Let’s see what color it is: chocolate with milk?” You’d think that such an innocent comment could just be laughed off, but Williams thought it was appropriate to freak out over the remark. Even worse, the International Tennis Federation even announced they were starting an investigation into Mr. Nastase’s remarks.
Indeed strange, the times we live in.
