The PCUSA Votes on the Definition of Marriage

On Friday, July 6, the PCUSA took a vote on whether or not to change their current definition of marriage from “man and the woman” to “two people to be married.”1  The denomination already allows openly homosexual clergy, and this vote is just another step in its trajectory through liberalism towards apostasy.  The PCUSA is the largest Presbyterian denomination in America, having a larger membership than all other Presbyterian denominations combined, but it has been steadily losing both individual membership and whole congregations, dropping below two million in membership for the first time in its history this year.  The vote took place at this year’s general assembly, and the change failed to pass by a count of 338 to 308.2  While this is good news, I suppose, it is important to note a few points.  First, this is merely temporary.  The sodomites will not rest until they force every Christian (I use the term loosely) denomination to sanction their sinful behavior.  A few more conservative congregations leave, a few more seminary Marxists get their degrees, and this will pass in a few years’ time.  Secondly, sixteen representatives changing their votes would have passed the change – sixteen.  The largest Presbyterian denomination in America was sixteen votes away from taking a huge step in abandoning Christian morality for modern paganism.  Staggering.  Third, if you read through this article, you’ll notice that the homosexual advocates cite that “love” was on their side, implying that those who voted against their changes are taking the side against Christian “love.”  But those who voted against these changes did so on the basis of God’s immutable law, and by accusing them of being unloving, the homosexuals add rank heresy to their sexual perversion in accusing our Holy God of being unloving in His law.  And lastly, this should make every true Christian question the modern “church’s” positions on other matters of morality.  If so many mainline denominations like the PCUSA can stumble over such a basic issue as marriage being between one man and one woman, why in the world should we trust them when they speak on much more nuanced issues like race?  The people who are saying that a man and a man getting “married” is biblical are the same people saying that race is a matter of skin melanin and nothing more.  Think on that.

I attended the General Assembly in Pittsburgh on Monday, July 2 for the purpose of protesting a proposed new translation of the Heidelberg Catechism. In answer to Question 110, the new translation puts “excessive interest” for the original German “wucher.” Of course, this is a corruption of the original intended meaning, which is “usury” – i.e. any interest to any extent. Anyway, I spent most of the day there and as I sat in on various sessions, and as I walked about the venue, I saw and heard so many things that convinced me that the matter I came prepared to address was almost trivial compared to other serious instances of apostasy that already have gripped the PCUSA. I find it surprising to learn that the vote on marriage actually failed.  I think you are right : in a very short time such a vote will prevail without difficulty. Conservative (relatively speaking) congregations are leaving the PCUSA in droves.
