The young split-off from Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union, Alternative für Deutschland, triumphantly entered the German parliament by winning over 13% of the popular vote and a projected 87 seats in the Bundestag. This places them third overall behind Merkel’s CDU (33%) and the Social Democrats (20%).
The Left everywhere has gone crazy over this victory, the first time since 1949 a right-wing party has won seats in the German parliament. The Deutsche Rechtspartei had won 4 seats in the 1949 election, but none succeeded in getting re-elected. With AfD’s 87 seats, however, this is truly the first time Germany will see significant nationalist representation in their government since World War II.
In the wake of the election results, the “love and tolerance” crowd also showed their true colors as leftist protesters in Berlin joined against the AfD by chanting slogans like “All of Berlin hates the AfD!”
AfD is not only a nationalist party with many solid nationalists in leadership positions. It also has numerous Christian leaders and candidates. The party opposes abortion and gay “marriage” in addition to being eurosceptic and anti-immigration. One could almost assume that all of the true German Christians have now left Merkel’s “Christian” Democratic Union and joined with the AfD.
While it is, objectively speaking, a disappointment that only 13% of the German population (i.e. perhaps just over 15% of ethnic Germans) have uncucked themselves in the midst of one of the biggest invasions the nation has ever faced, given Germany’s history and the vilification of German nationalism in society from cradle to grave, this is a huge victory for the Right.
It now remains to be seen, however, if AfD can truly effect some real change in German politics as a minority party in government.
