May 2, 2011, marked the 400th anniversary of the completion of the King James Bible. Work on the Bible was begun in 1604 by the order of King James I of England and was completed in 1611. The KJV was the fourth English translation of the Bible, preceded by the Wycliffe, Tyndale, and Geneva versions, but the KJV has had the greatest influence on the English-speaking world compared to any of the other translations before or since. It would be impossible to determine how many KJVs have been printed, but the amount easily numbers in the millions. Being quoted by Shakespeare, containing passages memorized by millions, and serving as a centerpiece to most English-speaking homes for centuries – the impact and importance of this book would be difficult to overstate.
