Anyone who has visited Google’s homepage today will have noted Google’s tribute to the 19th-century French author Jules Verne on this, his 183rd birthday. Some of his best-known works include Journey to the Center of the Earth, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, and Around the World in Eighty Days. I remember reading those books growing up and having my imagination captured by the imagery and plotlines. Indeed, Jules Verne is considered one of the pioneers of the science fiction genre. Here at F&H, we seek not merely to point out the rottenness of our current culture, but also to identify positive alternatives from our past and present. The works of Jules Verne should definitely be on the list of books parents consider providing for their children to read or even just enjoying (or re-enjoying) themselves.
