“Fichte laid it down that education should aim at destroying free will, so that, after pupils have left school, they shall be incapable, through the rest of their lives, of thinking or acting otherwise than as their schoolmasters would have wished. . . . [A]ny serious criticism of the powers that be will become psychologically impossible. Even if all are miserable, all will believe themselves happy, because the government will tell them that they are so. . . . When this technique has been perfected, every government that has been in charge of education for a generation will be able to control its subjects securely without the need of armies or policemen.”
–Bertrand Russell, The Impact of Science on Society, pp. 62, 41
The liberal and democratic transformation of South Africa has been a terrible failure, as is the inevitable fate for all sub-Saharan African states under all regimes — with the exceptions of the white governments of South Africa and Rhodesia — but particularly Marxist ones. Despite the ANC’s entering its nineteenth year in government, and despite apartheid’s having ended nearly twenty-three years ago, cultural Marxists (including the overwhelming majority of white South Africans) have blamed the poor quality of education provided by the government in black public schools for the chaos in the country. The ANC has responded by asserting that the inequalities of the legacy of the apartheid education-system is to blame for their current failures1 — even after administering the most discriminatory anti-white affirmative action quotas the world has ever seen in both public and private sectors for more than eighteen years, and spending virtually all white people’s tax money on black people (including themselves and their closest friends, of course). An attempt to thoroughly refute this absurd claim would be a piece on its own, so I will simply make two quick observations here: 1. Blacks under apartheid received the best education of all black people in Africa, and 2. If any Christian education-system, regardless of how discriminatory it might have been, leaves any legacy upon black people whatsoever, it is still a great improvement on what preceded it, which was no education at all.
With the revolutionary Marxist ANC, of course, failing to provide answers regarding South Africa’s social and economic problems, I am forced to write this polemic as a Christian response to their neo-Babelist secular humanism.
First of all, let us look at what the liberals of South Africa are really saying. They want blacks to receive more government education, which of course equals indoctrination into more atheistic evolution, the “principles” of the sexual revolution, the religion of humanism and Marxism, the idolization of black terrorists, and other evils. In Europe and America, we see the tragic effects of this education on the blessed white people of the West in our current cultural decline — but imagine trying to teach the more depraved black people of Africa how to hate God better. This certainly is not a solution. Proof of this is evident from the recent leadership change in the ANC Youth League. The now-suspended leader, Julius Malema, was often accused of being too uneducated to be a national leader, but when he was replaced by the current acting president, Ronald Lamola (a well-spoken, qualified attorney2 who certainly cannot be regarded as undereducated), the cultural Marxists were silenced when he continued proclaiming the same message Malema did, only with more effectiveness.3
The racial egalitarians continue to make one crucial mistake. They (like true Jacobins) view all men as blank pages when they are born into this world, unrelated to both their Creator and the creation. These blank pages then need to be educated (or rather, indoctrinated), as the people they will eventually become are entirely a result of this education. Egalitarianism, being so far removed from reality, wrongly sees civilization as a product of education, while it is in reality the other way around. They continue promoting this doctrine, despite their own secular researchers admitting that genes play a decisive role in people’s educational development.4 Even Harvard scholars Richard Herrnstein and Charles Murray proved in their 1994 publication, The Bell Curve, that intelligence was a more important factor than education or socio-economic background in achieving success in American life.5 More importantly, this egalitarian doctrine is incompatible with and in direct opposition to Christianity, which teaches the doctrine of Total Depravity. In actuality, quality education does not enlighten unregenerate minds at all, but only widens the gap between the truth of Christ and their worldview, as Dabney rightly points out.
The most that cultural Marxists could possibly hope to achieve is to control the black masses by their government education. Ever since their agenda for racial integration (and eventual obliteration) has started, they have been faced with the problem of controlling the black masses, whether in South Africa, in the ghettos of Paris, Amsterdam, or London, or in big American cities, and keeping them from living out their savage tendencies. Education, i.e. conditioning, along with drugs and prisons, are examples of some of the means by which they attempt to exercise control over blacks, and end up doing them the greatest of injustices: refusing to give them the call to repentance of the true Gospel of the Bible. As Pastor Ross Mahan puts it: “All you end up with is more informed drug addicts and fornicators.” It is clear, therefore, that the education of the unregenerate leads to more godlessness, not less, as the amoral Westernization of Asians6 and blacks7 evidence. Indeed, a sense of rootedness and identity, and the sanctification thereof, is the only true way of Christianizing the nations.
Now, I certainly do not wish to undermine the vital importance of Christian education, which is a Biblical command within a household-covenantal context (Deut. 6:7). However, at the same time, it would be a grave mistake and a compromise with egalitarianism to think that even a purely Christian education would obliterate cultural and racial differences among Christians. The Christianization of the world’s cultures does not and will not annihilate genetic differences, just as two families do not suddenly become identical if both are taught the principles of Christianity. Furthermore, as a Traditionalist in line with Biblical Covenantalism, I believe culture to be formed through lineage and generations, and not merely by immediate external factors and environmental surroundings. But even Christian education, of itself, cannot be regarded as the via salutis for man’s problems arising from his depravity, and neither for those of black South Africans. It might have been, if we were able to somehow accommodate the “blank-page” notion of egalitarianism to Christianity; but that would be impossible, since egalitarianism denies both the doctrine of Original Sin and God as the sovereign Giver of all gifts. No, the solution to South Africa’s problems, and the only way out of the mess in which the country currently finds itself, starts with true repentance and faith followed by real and personal sanctification, of which Christian education is certainly one of the fruits.
The modern Church’s notion that a similar Christian education would (or should) obliterate all racial and national differences is, in itself, quite fallacious, since any truly Christian education would be theonomic in nature, and theonomy necessitates kinism. But that notwithstanding, the practical implications of the reality of race itself force the Christian to take racial differences into consideration as he takes dominion over creation. Not doing so would, in reality, be a gnostic denial of the Gospel and would undermine real and personal sanctification. For instance, we should recognize that even a truly Christian black nation would be unable to run a government apart from its traditional tribal existence and hierarchies. Furthermore, the indolence of another depraved race, the Mongoloids,8 is one of their genetic weaknesses; and these genetic realities do not magically disappear at the moment of regeneration, but need to be addressed by a continuing process of sanctification. However, just as whites helped the black race to develop their lands via colonialism, modern blacks would require again the help of white Christian nations to maintain godly rule among their own people. This is why Nil Desperandum rightly states that even when God sanctifies all of the nations of creation, some nations and races will fulfill the role of helpers, others being the helped. We are, after all, commanded in Scripture to support and edify the weaker members and nations in Christ’s body (Rom. 14-15).
Therefore, the solution to South Africa’s current chaos is not the thorough education of its people by the Marxist government, but thorough repentance — first and foremost by the white Boers, whom God has providentially ordained to be His light-bearers throughout modern and recent history in that part of the world. This should externally manifest itself in an independent and theonomic Christian Boer republic, whose government can openly proclaim Christ’s Kingship to the world and fulfill its covenantal role of raising and educating its younger generations. Only after this is done, when the Boers are not hindered from fulfilling their Biblical duty to care for their families and kin (I Tim. 5:8), can they continue to effectively aid the other races of Southern Africa in their process of sanctification. Christian education will form an integral part of this sanctification (Matt. 28:19), so that the peoples can sing God’s praises and rejoice in Him in their nations, as nations (Rom. 15:9-12).
