As Christians, we condemn the murders of nine innocent people in Charleston, an act made more heinous by its setting in a church prayer meeting. Mr. Roof appears to be a young man with serious mental issues, and to the extent anyone else can be blamed it should be the left-wing movements in this country that led to the deinstitutionalization of the mentally ill in the 1970s. Innumerable disturbed individuals these days roam the streets, or commit acts of violence, and their families and next of kin are mostly helpless before the law to force any kind of treatment or institutional care. The radical individualism of the deinstitutionalization movement is anathema to Kinism, which properly sees that the family, particularly the father, ought to have some power over adult children who are self-evidently not able to sufficiently care for themselves.
Mr. Roof, like the Aurora Springs killer who styled himself as the “Joker” from the Christopher Nolan Batman films, indulged his narcissism by assuming a comic book caricature of the ultimate societal villain in the mainstream media’s narrative: the white hater. To the extent Mr. Roof believed the rhetoric he espoused, his crime was to hold innocent individuals responsible for the behavior of other individuals who belong to the same group. In the media reaction so far, we see the same injustice, as white advocates are blamed for unlawful violence they do not condone.
We can be assured that the next time a black criminal kills a white police officer, no such soul-searching will be made of the media’s own demonization of white cops as instruments of oppression. The same can be expected for any other white blood shed by blacks, even – especially – those black crimes to occur in response to Charleston. Black violence is random, or tragic, while white violence is hateful.
The Left, however, are overplaying their hand. By trying to pin this on mainstream right-wing voices, they risk radicalizing and alienating whites across the country. They seem incapable of learning the fable of Aesop, for if they smear Ted Cruz as a “racist” for cashing someone’s check, the word will lose its power. The Left has revealed itself, through this and other episodes, to be governed by nothing more than raw hatred and uncontrollable rage towards white Christians.
